THE Lyra STORY

Once upon a time, in 18th century Nuremberg, pencils were manufactured exclusively by the carpenters’ guild. Competition was non-existent, and pencil quality suffered because of it. Then, in 1806, Napoleon Bonaparte ordered the administrative restructuring of Bavaria, stripping Nuremberg’s carpenters’ guild of the privilege of making the city’s pencils in the process. Seizing the opportunity, Johann Froescheis registered his business as a pencil manufacturer, and the LYRA Pencil Company was born.

In 1868, Johann Froescheis II registered the brand LYRA, making LYRA one of the oldest pencil brand trademarks in the world. Later, in the early 1900s, the LYRA pencil company was producing roughly 7000 gross of pencils (over 1,000,000 individual pencils) per week, making it not only one of the oldest, but also one of the most prolific pencil manufacturers in the world.

Today, LYRA is known for its unique, high-quality pencils. Pencils like their Colorstripe and Groove pencils not only excel in the quality department, however, they also set a new standard for pencil design and functionality. Shop our selection of LYRA products and you’re sure to find something that appeals to your aesthetic sensibility.
