This week’s pencil artist is one of our followers on Twitter, and the second we saw his work, we knew he was our next Pencil Artist of the Week. His name is Jonny Lancaster, and he hails from across the pond in the north-eastern part of England. His pencil drawings feature subjects that range from pets and wildlife to famous celebrities, and they are some of the finest you will find on either side of the Atlantic.
Instead of simply recreating images from photographs and impersonating a photographer, Jonny manages to make the graphite medium the star in all of his drawings. From the subtle changes in the pressure being applied to the pencil, to the shading in the background of each image, it is apparent that, while the image contains all of the detail found in a photograph, it was created with a pencil, not a camera. This is the true mark of a pencil artist; the ability to create images that cannot exist outside of graphite and paper.
