This week’s featured pencil artist is Roos, a pencil artist and DeviantArt contributor from the Netherlands. Roos has been drawing, painting and creating since she was just a little girl and, as a result of her countless hours of practice, she has developed an eye for detail and color that makes her drawings stand out from a very crowded DeviantArt community.
Roos’ favorite creative tool is the Pierre Noire, Conté a Paris France 1710 3B charcoal pencil. She uses this pencil to create drawings with rich, deep blacks that complement the layers of color she adds after the initial drawing is finished. The results are drawings that are saturated with color, giving them a surreal edge that caught my eye.
The most impressive thing about Roos’ drawings is that they keep getting better and better. One of the first drawings she ever posted on her DeviantArt profile was a portrait of Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. A year later, she reattempted the drawing, and progress she has made in a year’s time is incredible. In her second drawing, the details are more refined, the proportions and colors are more accurate and the drawing as a whole looks much more polished. You can see the latter of the two drawings below, and you can see their side by side comparison here.
